There are some Y/A novels that have the emphasis on the "adult" part of the equation and others that are just "young." This one of the latter. It tells the story of a female mercenary and how she becomes embroiled in a struggle to overthrow an evil regent who is stealing power from his 16-year-old ward. Sadly, Richard III this is not. The palace intrigue is incredibly one-dimensional and lacking in subtlety. The battle scenes and fights do not generate much tension or excitement. The threat of death evokes ho-hum responses from the characters. And the love affair is as tepid as a day-old cup of tea.In other hands, this could have been an exciting and nuanced story. In these hands, it is a feel-good tale. I suggest "The Three Musketeers" by Alexandre Dumas as a model for the kind of story the author wishes to tell -- all full of swashbuckling battles and duels, unforgettable characters, complex politics and dire treachery.Product details

The Forsaken Crown The Desolate Empire Book 0 eBook Christina Ochs Reviews
I enjoyed the kick butt girl warrior. I also enjoyed the little romance side story. It was entertaining and held my interest.
Ambition is the downfall of men who let it rule their actions and allow evil to rule. A young Prince who is controlled by a regent who is attempting to steal his estate must grow up quickly to protect his mother and his land and people. Don't miss this one.
Good read, fast moving action. Liked the characters, easy to keep up them. The plot kept me involved. Looking forward to what happens next.
This story provided a great escape. The details of the battle are perfectly vivid. Following a family legacy despite other family members views, is not everyone. I look forward to learning more about the tale. Very good read.
This is the start of a great series. There are characters to admire, characters to hate and some are in the wait-and-see class. When an author creates characters that you really want to know what they are going to do next, that's obviously a good thing. When the plot hangs together, that adds to the mix. After reading this, I definitely wanted to go on with the next book. And the one after that, etc.
So why did I give this book only four stars? I felt the very beginning of the book, while grabbing my attention, turned out to be disconnected to the later parts of the story. Also, there are some editing/proofreading mistakes. Still, I recommend not only this book, but the rest of the Desolate Empire books.
It feels like things are just getting started when the book ends. The ending is in a legitimate stopping place, but I wanted to spend more time with the characters. They are compelling, and more time spent with them should be a good investment. This first book seems to skim the surface of relationships, and I hope there is more depth in the next installment in the series. The action scenes are brief but intense. Some scenes seem too easily resolved, but the protagonist’s reversals of fortune will make the reader’s head spin...so hang on!
This is billed as a prequel book to The Desolate Empire series and it does a nice job establishing some of the characters that will presumably be in the larger main story. It's also a fairly long book for a prequel at about 242 pages and that's a good thing here because it allows for a more fleshed out story without having the dilemma of feeling rushed. It also has quite a few battle scenes, again a good thing. I did enjoy the tale and felt the setting and characters were well done and felt whole. A good start.
