Casey Odland was brought up into a life of privilege - a privilege he threw away often. Criminal activity started at an early age with the first arrest at age 12 in 1970. In 1974 he was arrested 19 times and beat all the charges in court. He was a ward of the court from 1970 till 1975, when at age 17, he became an emancipated minor, getting his first taste of pure capitalism and ending up homeless for nine months. A robbery conviction landed him in prison in 1978. Upon release in 1980 he vowed to never return to criminal activity and was never arrested again. Within three years of being released he started a business from scratch in direct relation to a vocational trade he'd taken in prison, thanks to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The business became very successful. Along the way he encountered every obstacle in usual fashion (head-on and without a clue), always learning on the back-end the proper way to tackle a problem. This book is written in the vernacular of prison language, street life, and the everyday person.

It's one thing to read Casey's true and hilarious stories. It's much better to actually hear his voice and how he tells it in an Audible version. And even better to actually be there in the same room and have him tell you the story face to face. As far as delivery goes, I would say he is most similar to Eddie Murphy, because I'm always reminded of my big bro whenever I see an Eddie Murphy movie.
For no other reason, just read or listen to this book because it is very funny, and you'll also get some really great life lessons along the way. At an early age, knowing Casey's story first hand as it happened, I made up my mind not to follow his nefarious path, never taking drugs or being arrested. Casey's monetary and health advice is my favorite, helping me save money I would have otherwise spent, and paying serious attention to what I eat in order to feel good.
One of the things I found amusing growing up, is that when I would be recognized as an Odland in a public place, people actually looked out for me, because as I later realized, they probably feared what would happen to them if any harm came to me while they were in the area. I would pretend I didn't hear others discussing it as I passed through the area.
Casey is one of the most giving and kind people I have every met, and definitely one of the funniest people you will ever meet. Maybe one day he will be declared a saint. In my mind, he already is. I'm so glad he lived through everything he did so that others well along the wrong path can live through their currently bad situation and know they too can have a much better life.

This may seem an odd review coming from a former corrections officer, but I really enjoyed this book. I grew up in Connecticut about the same time as Casey, and he gained instant credibility with his description of going on the Ranger Andy TV show in Hartford. What a hoot! Unless, you share that experience, words cannot describe what a thrill that was for any elementary school kid in the state. Beyond that charming story, all of Casey's chapters are just as fun and genuine. I worked in one of the worst jails in the country, Whalley Avenue jail, a transit point for many young men going to courts or prisons between New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. The place is a madhouse, and houses everybody from Latin Kings to Diablos and Outlaws, to "juvvies" - kids charged with murders and rapes. This book is a spark of hope to anyone who has lost hope in their ability to turn their lives around, find love, get a job, and start a business. God bless you Casey, you gave the best you could in this book - yourself. My own half-brother, Mark, has been in and out of jail since he was 12. He's getting out this year, and into a half-way house. I'm sending him a copy of your book Casey this week. We all know, that when it comes to sobriety and choosing life over death, you have to want it. You proved to the world, you can get what you want if you work for it with passion and are willing to walk the talk.
Interesting reading, took only Two sittings for me to read the complete book. Like the insights and direction of the author.
A common business process these days is to record "lessons learned" during a project so the things that worked and didn't work can be remembered and used or avoided on the next project. The author has applied this concept to his life and offers the "lessons" for the benefit of any who might need them, especially those who have made some of the same (i.e. criminal) mistakes he has made.
As an "inspirational" writing, this book provides a fascinating look at a life in which many good choices have (eventually) been made, along with an almost equal number of really stupid (or maybe just arrogant) actions taken early on (eventually leading to the "Ex-con" status of the title), and, throughout, an amazing amount of uncanny good luck.
This makes for an enjoyable read for all and provides useful self-help info for a target audience of those who might have made similar mistakes in life. Some of the sections are Mr. Odland's particular versions of advice on subjects you find in many self-help books finance, starting/running a small business, relationships/dating. Other situations are a bit more specific how to deal with a mother-in-law who abuses your credit card or suggestions for surviving a prison riot. A few, I'm sure, you won't find anywhere else the best table in a certain restaurant for viewing Yosemite Falls while dining or the best place to buy bread to feed to a mountain lion to keep it from eating your face off while you are mining its mountain.
Yep, he's had an interesting life and that makes for an interesting book.
